Write in full written prose, not transcribed speech. Speech relies on tone and gesture that text does not carry, so the following spoken patterns are banned:
- Verbless fragments used as topic headers inside prose, such as "Orphan files." followed by commentary. Instead write a full sentence: "The scheme does not yet say what happens to orphan files."
- Elliptical questions that enumerate options without a verb, such as "-- error, ignored, or implicitly the main module?". Instead ask a complete question: "Should the compiler reject such files, skip them, or assign them to the main module?"
- Bare imperatives that could be misread as descriptions of existing state, such as "say explicitly that..." or "decide whether...". Recommendations must name the actor and the artifact: "The metadata rules should state that..." or "The design still needs a decision on...".
- Dangling clause chains where the reader must infer which clause is observation and which is advice. Every sentence states either a fact about the current state or a recommendation, marked as such.
