Fix for Fusion 26.0.1 / macOS 27.2 for the NSSegmentedCell setSegmentCount: toolbar crash
# Hide the VM toolbar
# Remove the device status from the toolbar
#
# Sets:
# * `'TB Is Shown' 0`
# * Omit `singleWindow.toolbar.deviceStatus` from `TB Item Identifiers`
defaults write com.vmware.fusion 'NSToolbar Configuration PLVMSingleWindowToolbar2' -dict-add 'TB Is Shown' 0 'TB Item Identifiers' '("singleWindow.toolbar.power.suspend/resume","singleWindow.toolbar.snapshot.window","NSToolbarSpaceItem","NSToolbarFlexibleSpaceItem","singleWindow.toolbar.path","NSToolbarFlexibleSpaceItem")'
# If you want to reproduce the crash:
## defaults write com.vmware.fusion 'NSToolbar Configuration PLVMSingleWindowToolbar2' -dict-add 'TB Is Shown' 1 'TB Item Identifiers' '("singleWindow.toolbar.power.suspend/resume","singleWindow.toolbar.snapshot.window","NSToolbarSpaceItem","singleWindow.toolbar.deviceStatus","NSToolbarFlexibleSpaceItem","singleWindow.toolbar.path","NSToolbarFlexibleSpaceItem")

The full installer failed in exactly the same way as the two normal updates. On Apple Silicon, "Install macOS…app" uses the same update mechanism (UpdateBrain → patchd), so it hit the same wall. The new crash-report folder did its job, though: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/OTAUpdate-2026-10-27-07-19-11.ips holds the full installer log, and it shows where things go wrong.

What the log shows:

  1. Installing 27.2 works. The system volume is patched and sealed, and the new startup files are written to Preboot under manifest 38D0D4C9…. A new security policy (LocalPolicy) for 27.2, 0F12B055…, is created at 06:58.
  2. patchd deliberately doesn't switch to the new policy itself. It skips ff_commit_local_policy_nonce "on condition (ctx->do_postupgrade_boot)" and leaves that to a "post-upgrade" boot.
  3. Then the bless step (marking what to start next) prepares that boot: bless2_boot_with_args() … "boot_once" = 1 reading blessed macOS local policy …/LocalPolicy/…94.img4 ← B8B2…7894, the OLD 30-Sep policy bootpolicy_get_

Bring sane trapezoid tab shapes back in Firefox with toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets=true in about:config
/**
* On macOS put this in /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile name>/chrome/userChrome.css
* You can find your profile path in about:profiles
* on about:config you need to enable toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets
* on about:profiles there is 'Restart normally...' button

Proper 7-Zip 26.02 changelog

7-Zip 26.02

Released 2026-06-25

7-Zip 26.02 hardens archive parsing, closes several malformed-input and oversized-allocation paths, and fixes compatibility issues in XZ, NSIS, filesystem-image, and UI code.

Security and robustness

  • Hardened the C and C++ 7z readers against malformed headers. The readers now reject duplicate or contradictory metadata blocks, validate each property within its declared size, verify external-stream references, and require metadata payloads to be consumed exactly.
  • Added overflow and range checks for pack positions, coder and substream counts, unpack-size arrays, next-header offsets, and next-header sizes. Empty next headers must now have a zero offset and CRC.

Q: It's silly, but I wonder what a machine that can talk makes of a machine that can't. Is there any sense of likeness?

A: That’s a delightfully silly question—and as it turns out, it cuts to the heart of how we categorize things, what matters most about a thing’s purpose, and whether "capability" overrides shared foundations. Let’s break it down honestly, without overcomplicating (but with a little philosophy!) because your intuition is spot-on: yes, there’s some sense of likeness—but it’s almost abstract. The way those capabilities define the "like-ness" changes everything.

Here’s how I think a machine that can talk would look at two machines it can’t: (no jargon, just logical layers):

🔍 1. The Broadest Likeness: "We’re Both Machines"

  • What it would say: "We share a foundation: we’re made of matter, obey physics, require energy to function, and have no consciousness. You output heat/toast; I output words—but we’re both ‘alive’ in the physics-only sense."
